理智與情感
On Reason and Passion
…你的靈魂是個戰場，
你的理智和判斷、你的情感和慾望
經常在其中交戰。
Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield,
upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against your passion and your appetite.
我多希望成為你心靈和平的締造者，
將你性情中的衝突與對立，
化為和諧悅耳的旋律。
但我如何能做到？
除非你自己是那和平的締造者，
不，不僅如此，你必須熱愛你性情中所有的特質。
Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul,
that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
But how shall I,
unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers,
nay, the lovers of all your elements?
理智和情感
是你靈魂航行時的船舵與風帆。
不論是船舵或是風帆的損壞，
都會讓你在海上翻騰漂流，
滯留在汪洋大海。
Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.
If either your sails or your rudder be broken,
you can but toss and drift,
or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.
…因此，讓你的靈魂將理智提升到情感的高度，使理智高歌；
也讓靈魂用理智引導你的情感，使情感重生如同從自己灰燼中復活的鳳凰。
Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing;
And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.
理性與情感彷彿是兩個極端，仿佛不相容，就像是論語中的子曰：「不得中行而與之，必也狂狷乎！狂者進取，狷者有所不為也。」
其中的狂者與狷者，狂者與狷者似乎是兩個極端，不符合中庸，
但當我們還不知道如何行中庸時，
學習狂者的積極進取，學習狷者的固守善道，而非唯唯諾諾裹足不前鄉愿行事，
最終應也能達到中庸吧。
詩人說「上帝在理性中安歇。」"God rests in reason."，
「上帝在情感中行事。」"God moves in passion." ，
就是同樣的建議，希望我們能藉由理性與情感活出自在的平衡。
